Financial Fitness Fair Season Begins

The air is getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, and the Financial Fitness Fair season has officially begun. Since the launch of this money management experience, more than 53,000 students have participated, with a record-setting 8,774 becoming fiscally fit in the 2017/18 school year! While there’s still a lot of planning underway for the often-busier spring season, there have been a number of fairs scheduled for this fall.

The season kicked off on October 10, with the perennial fair at Portland High School and a first-time fair at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast, where the Waldo County Technical Center, Searsport High School, and Belfast High School students all joined together. While it was a first-time fair, recent feedback suggests that it certainly won’t be the last.

“What a marvelous event – thank you so much! Our kids all learned something (as did I). It was professional and engaging and you did all of the work, which is a nice break for the educators. We will be meeting as a guidance team in November, discussing how we can make the FFF a county-wide event. All students need to experience the event. Kudos to the credit unions,” said Bonnie Klein, Student Services Coordinator for Waldo County Technical Center.

In addition to mainstay fairs, such as Lewiston and Aroostook, the League encourages credit unions and chapters to continue exploring additional fair opportunities.

“This country has a major financial literacy deficiency, with only five states having a personal finance requirement in high school. Maine is not one of those states, which is why the effort from our credit unions in organizing and hosting the Financial Fitness Fairs is so incredibly important and appreciated,” explained Jake Holmes, Financial Literacy Outreach Coordinator for the Maine Credit Union League.
