Technology offers both opportunities and challenges

In this month’s News & Views focus, we take a closer look at the role of technology at Maine’s credit unions, and the impact it has had in recent years.  “While technology has greatly enhanced convenience for how and where members conduct financial transactions, it also presents new challenges as credit unions seek other ways to engage members.  We have significantly increased our focus on bringing in speakers to share insight, knowledge and expertise on how credit unions can utilize technology to connect with members,” remarked Todd Mason, President/CEO of the Maine Credit Union League.

Mason said the League and its subsidiary, Synergent, are sensitive that with technology comes both opportunities and challenges.  “We are committed to providing thought-leadership, advice and management expertise in helping our credit unions navigate the evolving world of technology.”

Among the challenges that technology has brought to credit unions is the decreased foot traffic in branches.  As a result, workshops focused on engaging members through social media, digital marketing and communications, and other channels are important in helping credit unions move forward and provide both high tech products and services to members while still providing high touch interactions with members.

In this month’s issue, we will explore different aspects of how technology is being utilized in Maine credit unions, perceptions of technology from CU leaders, and learning opportunities that are essential in integrating technology into the operational landscape.
