Heroes, fintech and passion – Diverse group of speakers to address 2018 Convention

Three highly-acclaimed keynote speakers will appear at the 2018 Maine CU League Convention.  top to bottom Mark J. Lindquist, Kevin Brown and John Waupsh.

From the Opening Session to the Closing Session, the three keynote speakers confirmed for the Maine CU League’s 2018 Annual Meeting & Convention are as diverse as the communities and members that credit unions serve but, just as the CU system does, they all have one thing in common – expertise, knowledge and a passion for speaking.

It all begins with the Opening Session Speaker on Friday, May 18, at 9 a.m., when Kevin Brown takes the stage and promises an hour of inspiration, motivation and strategies on “The Hero Effect: Being Your Best When It Matters Most.”  Brown’s message is simple, yet powerful.  “Show up every day and make a positive difference.  Every action and, ultimately, every result we achieve both personally and professionally is driven by this philosophy.”  Brown will also mix in stories of his own unconventional path to business and personal success including a colorful resume that includes working in a funeral home, washing oil drums, selling household appliances door to door and buying a franchise at the age of seventeen.

The General Session follows Brown with a topic that, for many in the CU and financial services industry could be best called ‘the elephant in the room’, Fintech.  Author of Bankruption: How Community Banking Can Survive FinTech, the book considered a survival guide for credit unions and community banks facing immense global competition and FinTech startups, John Waupsh will share answers and stir questions in his presentation.  Waupsh explains, “Credit unions have always been the go-to institutions for local relationship banking, but their asset share has been on the decline for three decades as the big banks just got bigger.”  Experts agree that Waupsh’s message is important to hear.  “Bankruption is a wild romp through the nascent history of Fintech, punctuated by personal stories and concise, powerful lessons. Do yourself a favor and read this book,” declares Brett King, host of the world’s #1 FinTech radio show.

The Closing Session will tie much of the previous speaker’s remarks and focus together and send convention-goers back to their credit unions with renewed energy, understanding and passion.  On Saturday, May 19, the 2018 Convention will conclude with an address by nationally recognized motivational speaker, Mark J. Lindquist.  His address, “Passion: 8 Steps to Reignite Yours and Create Connections,” will cause attendees to “take a moment to reflect on the things you need to do to reignite your passion – in your work for credit unions, or in the pursuit of your personal interests.”  Lindquist brings a strong background of service and passion to as a speaker including serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, and a former member of Americorps.
