Credit Union News & Events


The last month of 2018 proved to be a busy one for credit unions around the state. Among grand openings, school visits, holiday celebrations, and fundraising for the Ending Hunger campaign, here is a look at what Maine’s credit unions were up to in December:

  • Staff from Acadia FCU’s Stillwater branch in Bangor volunteered to be bell-ringers on Christmas Eve, assisting the Salvation Army in raising money for those in need.
  • Atlantic FCU awarded a total of $2,500 to five recipients of their 2018 Amable & Vivian Caron College Scholarship on December 14.
  • Bangor FCU made a visit to the Old Town Elementary School last month, where they contributed food donations to the Community Pantry ahead of the busy holiday season.
  • Capital Area FCU held a silent auction to benefit Special Olympics of Maine, with the winning bids announced on December 21.
  • Central Maine CU hosted their 16th Annual Books for Kids program on December 6, where they made a $3,000 donation to Androscoggin County public elementary schools.
  • Community CU made children in the L/A area very happy with Santa visiting their Lewiston branch on December 11.
  • cPort CU celebrated the opening of their new Middle Street branch on December 20.
  • Down East CU joined SURF, Maine’s largest surcharge-free ATM network last month – providing Down East members fee-free access to 260+ ATMs across the state.
  • Members at Evergreen CU had the opportunity to meet some of the members of the Maine Mariners hockey team and its official mascot at the South Portland branch on December 21.
  • Staff from Gardiner FCU visited kindergarten classes at Laura E. Richards Elementary School on December 10. On top of discussing wants, needs, and savings, they collectively read a holiday book.
  • KV FCU’s sign is up at their new Waterville branch at 299 Main Street.
  • Maine Family FCU’s last day for their 50/50 raffle was December 21. They were able to raise $5,158, with half going to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at the Maine Medical Center.
  • On December 11, Maine Savings FCU donated more than 20 computers to the United Technologies Center – a center that offers a variety of programs designed to give high school students hands-on, career-oriented education.
  • Maine State CU celebrated the grand opening of their new Waterville branch on December 11.
  • NorState FCU collected 13,882 lbs of food throughout their Hope for the Holidays Food Drive. They far exceeded their goal of 10,000 lbs and raised 1,600 more lbs than the year before.
  • Otis FCU purchased and wrapped gifts for local children on December 14. All gifts were funded by staff members who contributed by participating in Casual Friday.
  • Oxford FCU made $1,000 donations to local organizations during the 12 Days of Christmas. With donations totaling $12,000, Oxford FCU contributed to the Servants Heart Food Pantry, River Valley Animal Activists, Norway Homeless Shelter, Mexico Lions Club, Maine Special Olympics, Haily Hugs – Childhood Cancer, Oxford Hills Middle School Food Pantry, Caring Stitchers at Rumford Hospital, Senior Plus Meals on Wheels, South Paris Maine Veterans Home Activity Fund, Christmas for Teens and the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice.
  • Penobscot County FCU visited two senior classes at Old Town High School on December 11, where they discussed basic savings and checking accounts, wants versus needs, and debit and credit cards.
  • Sabattus Regional CU raised over $2,000 for Ending Hunger during their Christmas Raffle last month.
  • Saco Valley CU donated $1,000 to WPOR’s Christmas for Kids on stage at the annual Jingle Jam on December 5.
  • Sebasticook Valley FCU paid out $3,000 to their Holiday Cash Calendar winners, with all proceeds benefiting Ending Hunger.
  • In lieu of their Annual Yankee Swap, The County FCU’s Houlton branch made a branch-wide donation to the Backpack for Kids program on December 19.
  • Town & Country FCU held a blood drive at the Operations Center on December 19, honoring a local two year-old diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
  • Trademark FCU expanded their membership to those who live, work, worship, or attend school in Cumberland, Sagadahoc, and Kennebec counties.
  • Being just one of many philanthropic acts during their Month of Giving, TruChoice FCU donated $500 to the Buxton Food Co-Op on December 19.
  • University CU concluded their annual Ending Hunger on Campus campaign on December 31, pledging to match donations up to a total of $25,000.
