In Step With The People!  Maine CUs' Ending Hunger Walking Tour Completes Record-Setting Journey

December 5, 2014

"Maine people have a tremendous amount of pride, especially when admitting they don't have enough to eat.  Many times they think they are alone in their situation.  What the Walking Tour does, in part, is lets them know they are not alone and there are people and organizations available to help," said Brenda Davis, speaking at University CU in Orono at the conclusion of the 13th Annual Maine CU's Ending Hunger Walking Tour.

On Wednesday, December 3, the 13th Annual Maine Credit Unions’ Ending Hunger Walking Tour came to its conclusion with a special ceremony at University Credit Union in Orono. Brenda Davis, Director Emeritus of Cross Roads Ministries, an Old Town-based hunger agency serving thousands of people throughout Eastern Maine, partnered again with Maine’s credit unions to spend nearly six weeks traveling across the state to bring attention on the severity of hunger in Maine.
The Walk concluded with a contribution from the Maine Credit Union’s Campaign for Ending Hunger for $2,514, which is just a portion of the record-breaking $513,000 raised in the 2013 Campaign.
This year, Maine’s Young & Free Spokester, Mallory Lavoie, joined Davis for the final stretch of the journey from Brewer FCU to University CU. The Walk covered more than 1,500 miles, with approximately 700 miles of that on foot. Davis visited a record-setting 83 communities and covered all 16 Maine counties. While on the road, Davis collected stories about hunger to shed light on the struggles Mainers face every day. Nearly 14% of Maine’s population is identified as food insecure and more than 40% of kids under the age of 12 show some evidence of hunger.
To support the cause and raise awareness, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger donated a contribution to each of the 91 credit union branches Davis visited throughout the Walk. In all, The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger contributed nearly $30,000 to help end hunger through the Tour.
Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $5.3 million to help end hunger in Maine. To make a tax-deductible contribution to the Campaign, stop by a local credit union anytime or visit
