More than 800 celebrate strength of Maine's credit unions at Annual Meeting & Convention

May 23, 2016

The largest gathering of Maine credit union representatives and guests in more than two decades celebrated the strength and spirit of Maine's credit unions at the Maine Credit Union League's Annual Meeting & Convention on May 20-21, at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.

"With membership at record highs and consumers continuing to strengthen and establish relationships with Maine credit unions in unprecedented numbers, there is a lot for the Maine CU System to celebrate.  While we did celebrate our success, we also spent a lot of time at this year's Convention focusing on the future and reinforcing what we can accomplish by setting a vision and cooperating as a system to achieve our goals," stated John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League.

Two nationally-recognized and highly-rated keynote speakers addressed the Convention with Chad Pregracke, 2013 CNN Hero of the Year, serving as the Opening Session speaker, and Steve Gilliland, a member of the Speakers Hall of Fame, filling the role as the Closing Session speaker.  Both speakers have strong credit union ties, and praised the efforts and focus of credit unions on "making your communities a better place.  The credit union brand means something very positive to consumers, and you have so many opportunities to do even more."

In addition, Congressman Bruce Poliquin addressed Delegates at the Annual Meeting.  "My first relationship was with a credit union in Waterville, and all these years later, I still recognize the value of using a credit union.  My job is to help you do your job - helping your members.  I pledge to continue to advocate on behalf of credit unions in Congress."  Congresswoman Pingree spoke at the Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet, and called what credit unions do for your members "extraordinary and a testament to the cooperative spirit."
