Maine CUs Go National With Multiple Awards

March 14, 2014

Recently, three Maine credit unions were honored at an Awards Ceremony held in Washington, D.C.  The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) recognized the recipients of the national award winners of the Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility; the Louise Herring Award for Philsophy In Action; and the Desjardins Award for Financial Education.

Out of hundreds of entries, Maine credit unions picked up six awards.  In the Dora Maxwell Award category, which recognizes community-service, Community CU of Lewiston picked up a Second Place Award and Oxford FCU of Mexico picked up an Honorable Mention Award in their respective asset sizes.  The Louise Herring Award, which recognizes a credit union's member commitment and education, also was presented to multiple Maine winners including Five County CU of Bath receiving a First Award, and Community CU receiving a Second Place Award.  Finally, Community Credit Union received First Place Awards in both Youth and Adult Desjardins Financial Education Award categories.

Maine CUs were third in the number of national awards received, trailing only Pennsylvania and Michigan.  Out of the past 15 years, a Maine credit union has received at least one Award in this national competition in eleven of those years.  "It's a testament to the commitment, passion and dedication that Maine credit unions have in not only the number of awards received this year, but to consistently receive at least one at least every year.  To their communities, members and the general public, Maine credit unions are truly embracing the 'people helping people' philosophy," remarked John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League.
