Maine Credit Unions Give Hungry Mainers The Gift Of Food This Holiday Season
December 23, 2014
Recently, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger in partnership with the Good Shepherd Food Bank celebrated the 9th anniversary of Maine’s first “Food Mobile.,” with a major contribution and made a contribution that will provide more than 8,000 meals this holiday season. The contributions totaling $9,500 are just a portion of the record-setting $513,000 raised in the 2013 campaign. Maine’s credit unions were a founding partner of the state’s first Food Mobile back in 2005, and have remained a major contributor since that time.
The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger also made a $2,000 contribution to provide 8,000 holiday meals to Maine families across the state. The second contribution of $7,500 was made to the Food Mobile to ensure Maine’s most in need and underserved families will have continued access to food. The Food Mobile is specifically designed to transport food across great distances at safe temperatures delivering a mix of frozen, refrigerated, and dry grocery goods.
In 2013, the Food Mobile hit the road over 120 times, delivered an unprecedented 670,000 pounds of food and covered every county in the state. Since its inception in 2005, the Food Mobile has distributed over 4.6 million pounds of food throughout the state.
“This contribution comes at such an important time when so many food pantries are challenged to provide enough food to families to eat. We are so appreciative of the partnership and generosity of Maine’s credit unions throughout the year,” stated Kristen Miale, President of Good Shepherd Food Bank.
“Maine’s credit unions are about helping spread cheer in communities in a variety of ways. If people don’t have enough to eat, it’s hard to be in the spirit of the holidays. Ending hunger in Maine is a cause that Maine’s credit unions have embraced and are committed to raising funds and awareness for until it is eradicated,” stated Jon Paradise, Vice President of Governmental & Public Affairs for the Maine Credit Union League, which helps coordinate the Campaign on behalf of Maine’s credit unions.
Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $5.3 million to help end hunger in Maine.
