Legislative Candidates value endorsement and support from Maine's credit unions

When the endorsement by the Maine Credit Union League is featured in multiple newspaper articles, including a prominent Op-Ed piece by the current President of the Maine Senate, there is no doubt that the strength of the League and Maine's credit unions is understood by many legislative candidates. "Proud that my campaign is endorsed by the Maine Credit Union League," stated Senate President Mike Thibodeau in an Opinion piece that ran in the Bangor Daily News this week. "I am pleased that my campaign has been endorsed by the Maine Credit Union League," wrote Rep. Mark Dion, who is running for the Maine Senate. "It is great to see so many candidates proudly noting the support of the Maine Credit Union League in their campaign materials. Endorsements are an important part of political involvement, and are critical to building and strengthening support for our issues in the Maine Legislature," remarked John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League.
In addition to candidate endorsements, the Maine CU League has been active on the campaign in other ways including candidate visits to credit unions, attending a number of candidate and political fundraisers, and helping to facilitate 'Get Out the Vote' efforts. "With 680,000 credit union members in Maine, we represent a significant voting block, and can impact the outcome of a number of races. Electing candidates that understand and support credit unions is what our focus is on, and we are providing assistance to endorsed candidates that ask for it," stated Elise Baldacci, Director of Governmental Affairs for the Maine Credit Union League.
Over the past few weeks, Baldacci has helped to coordinate credit union visits by Rep. Henry Beck, House Chair of the Insurance and Financial Services Committee, who is running for the Maine Senate, to credit unions in the Waterville/Winslow area; Rep. Sara Gideon, House Majority Leader, to Midcoast FCU in Freeport; and Congressman Bruce Poliquin's visit on International Credit Union Day to Acadia FCU in Fort Kent. The Maine Credit Union League also worked with the York County Chapter of Credit Unions on its recent 'Meet the Candidate' night. "Many candidates have relationships with their local credit unions so they understand the important role that credit unions provide, and they also understand the fact that more than 50% of the state's population belongs to a credit union. They appreciate the opportunity to get in front of credit unions and members in their district," added Baldacci.
