Great For Members, Maine CUs Receiving Recognition As Great Places To Work
November 25, 2015
While the value and benefit that Maine credit unions provide to members have been well-documented over the years, Maine credit unions as great places to work is receiving lots of attention these days. From twelve Maine credit unions receiving designation as 'Best Places To Work in Maine in 2015' to two Maine CUs making a national list of 'Best CUs to Work for in America' to a former banker turned CU-employee praising the difference, the accolades for credit unions as employers are adding up.
A recent article highlighting a long-time banking employee's move to the credit union industry is the latest example of praise for credit unions as employers. The article, which ran in the front page of the Portland Press Herald's Business section, profiled Marcel Blais, who after more than 35 years in the banking industry, joined Maine Savings FCU as its Chief Retail Officer in September. John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League, said this type of positive publicity is "great for credit unions, both in terms of attracting new members, but also in attracting top-quality talent."
In the Blais article titled, "Longtime Maine bank executive a credit-union convert," the technology, product offerings and member-focus are all highlighted. The article also included information provided by your League on the significant growth and increased popularity of Maine credit unions. Blais is quoted in the article reflecting on why he left banks for credit unions. "With credit union membership growing steadily and technology enabling smaller financial institutions to offer more services, I decided it was a good time to make the swith. My banking friends joke around that I've jumped to the dark side. My response to them is I wish I had done it sooner."
In October, twelve Maine credit unions were among 70 organizations in the state to receive the 'Best Places to Work in Maine 2015' designation. "To have nearly twenty-percent of the companies on the 'Best Places' list be credit unions, it is gratifying for me, as someone who has worked in the credit union industry for decades and grew up in it. It's great to see credit unions receiving praise as employers," stated Ken Acker, President/CEO of TruChoice FCU, which was ranked #2 in the Small Company (15-49 employees) category.
In addition to TruChoice FCU, the other credit unions making the 'Best Places to Work in Maine 2015' list are (in alphabetical order): Bangor FCU; Five County CU; Infinity FCU; Maine Highlands FCU; Maine Savings FCU; Maine State CU; Midcoast FCU; Oxford FCU; PeoplesChoice CU; Town & Country FCU; and University CU.
Finally, in a national survey of employers, Infinity FCU and Town & Country FCU both received national recognition as Best Places To Work.
