Partnership Reinforces Maine CUs' Leadership Role In Ending Hunger Awareness Efforts
October 27, 2015
The enduring partnership between Brenda Davis, one of Maine's leading ending hunger advocates, and the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger, one of the largest philanthropic campaigns dedicated to ending hunger in Maine, continues to highlight the existence of hunger in communities across the state in a way that is both visible and impactful. With the start of the 14th Annual Maine CUs' Ending Hunger Walking Tour, the next six weeks will again highlight hunger in communities across Maine.
On Wednesday, October 21, the Tour held a pre-walk celebration at Penobscot County FCU in Old Town, which is Davis' hometown and where the idea for the Tour was hatched back in 2002 when Maine's credit unions and Davis came together to discuss a way to highlight hunger in communities statewide. The Walk itself officially began on Friday, October 23, at Maine State CU in Augusta, the credit union that raised the most funds for the Campaign in 2014. In remarks to get the Tour started, Normand Dubreuil, President/CEO of Maine State CU, said, "We are proud to be the starting point of the Tour once again." Dubreuil and Davis then walked from the credit union's main office to the State House.
Davis praised the role of the Maine CUs' Campaign for Ending Hunger in the Tour. "The credit unions recognized the need to make ending hunger more visible, and the ability to visit communities across Maine and talk about this issue with many different people makes a difference. Each year, the journey is a learning experience for everyone but more importantly it represents hope to people in the communities we visit."
The 14th Annual Walking Tour will visit 87 communities, at least one in every Maine county, and 92 credit union offices. In each community, the Tour will also make a contribution to a local food pantry. The funds distributed during the Tour, nearly $30,000 in total, are part of the record-setting total of $552,000 that Maine's credit unions raised in 2014.
This year's Tour concludes on Wednesday, December 2, at Brewer FCU on Dirigo Drive in Brewer.
Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised $5.9 million to help end hunger in Maine. 100% of all funds raised stay in Maine and go directly to the cause.
