For community-service, member service and financial education, Maine CUs have lots to celebrate
June 6, 2017
Collectively, Maine's credit unions are not only committed to serving the more than 685,000 Mainers with financial services, but also in making contributions to make the communities better places to live, to provide products and initiatives to help members, and to supporting strong learning opportunities to promote youth and adult financial education. Recently, some of these CU initiatives were honored with a state award from the Maine Credit Union League. All first-place recipients will compete in the national competition in the fall.
The Awards were presented at the Maine Credit Union League's Annual Delegates' Meeting in Portland. A total of 23 entries, a 35% increase over last year, were submitted for consideration in one of the four award categories: The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award, which recognizes credit unions for social responsibility projects within the community; The Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award, which honors CUs for internal programs and services that benefit membership; The Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award, which is presented to CUs for outstanding commitment to promoting youth financial education; and The Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award, which is given to honor CUs' work in helping adults with personal finance and money management. The 2017 awards were judged by public relations and communications professionals with a combined 50+ years of experience.

"Maine credit unions were founded on the philosophy of 'people helping people' and this is a philosophy that drives much of the core of how credit unions operate. Maine credit unions believe that strong communities are critical to success. These state awards recognize initiatives that reinforce and further that premise," stated Jon Paradise, Vice President of Governmental and Public Affairs for the Maine Credit Union League.
The nine first-place winners will compete in the national awards competition, coordinated by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), in the fall. Maine has had at least one credit union receive a national award in 14 out of the past 18 years. "There is a long tradition of excellence among Maine CUs at the national level. We look forward to having more CUs recognized this year," concluded Paradise.
