February 13, 2008 The ability for Maine credit union members to conduct most financial transactions is getting even more convenient as participation and locations in the Maine Credit Union Shared Branch Network continues to grow at a steady rate. With recent additions, there are now 28 Maine credit unions that are part of the shared branch network representing 80 locations in Maine. In addition to shared branch locations growing in Maine, the number of locations nationwide now stands at more than 3,100.
With shared branching, members of participating Maine credit unions can do everything from cash checks to make loan payments and a variety of other transactions as if they were standing in their own credit union. The most recent credit unions to join the shared branch network are Community Credit Union, with locations in Auburn and Lewiston, Eastmill Federal Credit Unions' main office in East Millinocket, and York County Federal Credit Unions' new branch in Biddeford. This brings the number of Maine credit union members who use credit unions that are part of the shared branch network to more than 310,000.
"Shared branching is attractive to members because it provides more locations to conduct financial transactions than any other financial institution in Maine, and still enables members to receive the exceptional credit union service that Maine's credit unions are recognized for. From Millinocket to York, credit union members can find a shared branch location, as well as when they travel out of state for work, vacation or school. Shared branching means that more than half of Maine's 600,000 credit union members can use their credit union across town, across state and across the country," explained John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League.
