Honors, Recognition Bestowed On Maine Credit Unions

December 7, 2007

For Maine's credit unions, providing services and products to the more than 600,000 Maine consumers who use a credit union and knowing that the credit union is having a positive financial impact on a member's life, is often recognition enough.  However, two Maine credit unions were recently recognized for not only what they do for members but also for employees and their community.

In Brewer, Brewer FCU was named the town's 'Business of the Year' recently.  Rick Kaul, President/CEO of Brewer FCU and a Brewer native, expressed extreme pride in accepting the Award.  Kaul said the Award is a proud moment not only for his credit union but for all Maine credit unions and the commitment they have to their communities.  He remarked, "We all know that credit unions participate in all sorts of events and they contribute much time and effort in their communities, but, often times, get overlooked when it comes to recognition."  Brewer's Mayor, Michael Celli, praised the credit union's staff, volunteers and members for "being community-minded and always willing to get involved."

In Mexico, there was also a celebration at Oxford Federal Credit Union as that credit union was recognized as one of 25 companies and organizations named as 'Best Places to Work in Maine.' The program is coordinated by the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) Maine State Council, in conjunction with the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and the Maine Department of Labor.  Governor Baldacci presented the Award to Oxford Federal Credit Union at an awards and recognition reception held at the Augusta Civic Center in October.

"Congratulations to staff, volunteers and members at both credit unions for being outstanding examples of the contributions and impact that Maine's credit unions have on communities across Maine.  In addition to saving Maine consumers $40 million last year through better rates and lower and fewer fees, Maine's credit unions are also wonderful citizens," commented John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League, the trade association for Maine's 68-affiliated credit unions.
