November 21, 2007 Thanks to the continued generosity of Maine's credit unions and the 600,000 people in Maine that use a credit union, 125 families who use food pantries across the state received a free Thanksgiving turkey courtesy of Maine's credit unions. The contribution, made at Good Shepherd's Eastern/Northern Maine Distribution Center in Brewer, was described by Good Shepherd as "yet one more reason we give thanks to our partnership with Maine's credit unions."
At the ceremony held on November 20th, Maine's credit unions also marked the second anniversary of the state's only Food Mobile's first visit to eastern Maine. The Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger is the primary sponsor and supporter of the Food Mobile. Since it first hit the road in October 2005, the Food Mobile has delivered nearly a half million pounds of food that has enabled food pantries to provide hundreds of thousands of meals to Maine families and citizens who otherwise would have gone hungry.
In addition to visiting every county in Eastern and Northern Maine on a regular basis, the Food Mobile has also responded to emergency situations, such as mill layoffs in recent years in Millinocket and Baileyville, as well as the floods in York County last spring.
"Today is about giving thanks for the commitment and dedication that Maine's credit unions and their members have to the cause of ending hunger. It is because the tremendous success of the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger in raising funds that we are able to make contributions like this," explained Jon Paradise, who presented the contribution on behalf of Maine's credit unions.
Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised more than $2.3 million to help end hunger in Maine. 100% of all money goes directly to the cause and stays in Maine.
