October 31, 2007 On Wednesday, October 31, at the Maine Credit Union League in Westbrook, representatives from Maine's credit unions joined Brenda Davis, Executive Director of Cross Roads Ministries, an Old Town-based hunger agency that serves thousands in Eastern Maine, to launch the Sixth Annual Maine Credit Unions' Ending Hunger Walking Tour. At the Halloween-day ceremony, representatives from the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger sent Davis off on the Ending Hunger Walking Tour with a real 'treat' by presenting her with the largest launch donation ever. Luke Labbe, chair of the Maine CU League's Social Responsibility Committee, which coordinates the Walk, applauded Davis as "a valued partner in the cause of ending hunger." He added, "Credit unions are about the communities they serve and the people who live there and knowing that 12% of Maine's population are food insecure is not something we find acceptable. Ending hunger is an extension of our philosophy of 'Maine people helping Maine people'."
The Walk is expected to encompass more than 600-700 miles and visit a record-setting 52 communities from Kittery to Madawaska, visiting every Maine county. At each credit union Davis visits, she will pick up a contribution from the Campaign as a way to support her cause. Again this year, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger will also make a $100 donation to a food pantry in each of the 52 communities that Davis will visit. In all, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has pledged to contribute nearly $20,000 to the Sixth Annual Walking Tour. The Walk is an effort on the part of Maine's credit unions and Davis to build awareness about the problem of hunger in Maine during the month of November, which has been designated as Ending Hunger month. The Walk will conclude with a special ceremony in Bangor, on Wednesday, November 28. Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $2.3 million to help end hunger in Maine.
