State Public Safety Commissioner Cites Maine Credit Unions' Walking Tour

Calls Hunger A Serious Public Safety Issue

October 30, 2007

On Tuesday, October 30th, at Maine State Credit Union in Augusta, representatives from Maine's credit unions joined Brenda Davis, Executive Director of Cross Roads Ministries, an Old Town-based hunger agency that serves thousands in Eastern Maine, to launch the Sixth Annual Maine Credit Unions' Ending Hunger Walking Tour.  This year's Tour will be visiting 52 communities, the most in its history.

Commissioner of Public Safety, Anne Jordan, walked with Davis and representatives from Maine State CU to the State House where she presented the Walk with a special citation honoring Davis and Maine's credit unions for "being a leader and proactive in helping to address an issue that really does affect public safety, hunger.  Many issues our agency deals with is caused by stress linked to not having enough food or money to buy food and other essentials. My agency and the State of Maine appreciates what credit unions are doing to help end hunger in Maine."

The Tour is expected to cover more than 1,200 miles, with 600 -700 miles covered on foot, and visit 52 communities from Kittery to Madawaska.  At each credit union Davis visits, she will pick up a contribution from the Campaign to support her cause.  For the second year in a row, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger will also make a $100 donation to a food pantry in each of the 52 communities that Davis will visit.  In all, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has pledged to contribute nearly $20,000 to the Sixth Annual Walking Tour.

The Walk is an effort on the part of Maine's credit unions and Davis to build awareness about the problem of hunger in Maine during the month of November, which has been designated as Ending Hunger month. The Walk will conclude at Bangor Federal Credit Union in Bangor on Wednesday, November 28.

Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $2.3 million to help end hunger in Maine including a record-setting $315,000 in 2006, with  Maine State CU taking top honors for ending hunger fundraising last year.
