Maine Credit Unions Warmly Received By Congressional Delegation

October 9, 2007

From October 2-4, twenty-six individuals from Maine's credit unions were in Washington, D.C., for meetings and visits with all four members of Maine's Congressional delegation and their staffs in their offices on Capitol Hill.  During the two-day trip, the group heard plenty of praise and support for the efforts of Maine's credit unions from each member of the delegation.

Senator Olympia Snowe again expressed her admiration for "all of the great things credit unions do in their communities.  It continues to impress me that 600,000 Maine people belong to a credit union.  That is just about half of the state?s entire population."

Senator Susan Collins called credit unions "the backbone of many communities throughout Maine dedicated to helping Maine people, not only by providing outstanding financial services, but also through community service.  What credit unions in Maine are doing in helping to end hunger is making such a difference and I want to thank you for that."

Congressman Tom Allen praised credit unions for bringing passion and energy to their members.  "From what you do with ending hunger to youth financial education, Maine credit unions are involved in helping Maine people."

Congressman Michael Michaud, the nation's only credit union board member serving in Congress, reiterated his strong belief and first-hand knowledge of how well credit unions serve their members, adding, "I have a unique perspective on how credit unions operate solely to help their members.  I am a very proud member of several credit unions."
