October 5, 2007

The Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger, in partnership with Good Shepherd Food Bank, celebrated the second anniversary of Maine's first and only "Food Mobile," by presenting a check in the amount of $7,000 (a symbol of the 7,000 lbs. of food that the Food Mobile can carry in one trip).

Recently, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger, in partnership with Good Shepherd Food Bank, celebrated the second anniversary of Maine's first and only "Food Mobile," by presenting a check in the amount of $7,000 (a symbol of the 7,000 lbs. of food that the Food Mobile can carry in one trip).  In addition, Maine's credit unions announced that the 'Food Mobile' has distributed 514,319 lbs pounds of food to food pantries across Maine since its inception in 2005. By the end of November, the Food Mobile will have delivered nearly half a million meals, a total of 637,859 lbs of food to Maine food pantries in its two-years of existence.

JoAn Chartier of Good Shepherd Food Bank called the partnership with Maine's credit unions "unique and significant in raising awareness and providing food to Maine's hungry.  The Food Mobile has literally been a valuable new vehicle to bring food to food pantries in all areas of Maine."

The Food Mobile has made multiple trips to food pantries in every Maine county, thanks to the funding of Maine's credit unions.

Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League, said that the Food Mobile and other such endeavors are evidence of the work being done to ensure that that the problem of hunger in Maine doesn't go unnoticed. "The Food Mobile has proven to be an invaluable resource to Maine's food pantries, not only because of the rise of gas and oil prices, but throughout the winter months when the truck is able to go to the more remote food pantries that may have trouble sending someone to pick up food.  Now more than ever, it is a powerful tool in our efforts to end hunger in Maine," Paradise explained.

Since 1990 the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $2.3 million to help end hunger in Maine.
