March 2, 2007 L-R Thomas Cusick of Maine State CU, Senator Collins, and John Murphy, President of the Maine CU League. As more than 60 representatives from the Maine Credit Union League and Maine credit unions listened, Maine's Congressional delegation had nothing but positive praise and high marks for Maine's credit unions at the League's Annual Breakfast for Maine's Congressional Delegation. Held in conjunction with the Credit Union National Association's Annual Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C., this year's breakfast took place on Tuesday, February 27, on Capitol Hill.
In remarks to the credit union audience, Senators Snowe and Collins, and Congressman Michaud all paid tribute to "the role that credit unions play in the lives of Maine people and in the communities they serve." Unfortunately, Congressman Allen was unable to attend, due to his flight being delayed several hours.
"I am always so impressed by what credit unions do and you should be proud of what you and your credit unions do for Maine people. The fact that 600,000 Maine people belong to a credit union is remarkable but not surprising. Congratulations on another outstanding year helping to end hunger in Maine by setting a new record in raising more than $315,000 for this cause. Thank you for all that you do and mean to Maine people," pronounced Senator Olympia Snowe.
Senator Collins noted that Maine credit unions help people in so many different way from creating special loans during times of needs to the rates credit unions offer. She also acknowledged the tremendous success of the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger and the difference it makes in the lives of so many Maine people. "Credit unions are not only wonderful financial institutions but wonderful citizens," Senator Collins added.
Congressman Michaud, the nation's only credit union board member serving in Congress, observed, "Credit unions have always been there for me and I intend to always be there for credit unions. I am proud to have been a credit union board member and, now an honorary board member, and, above all, someone who only uses a credit union for my financial services."
In his absence, Megan Shannon-Winterson from Congressman Allen's office addressed the Maine CU delegation. Ms. Wintersen, Congressman Allen's top legislative aide on financial services, offered the Congressman's apologies for his plane being delayed forcing him to miss the breakfast. "He always looks forward to meeting with credit unions and he will continue to support Maine's credit unions."
The Maine Credit Union League's President, John Murphy, thanked the delegation for being "united in its strong and vocal support of Maine's credit unions and our 600,000 members. We are fortunate to have a great working relationship with each member of our delegation and are pleased to have frequent communication, face-to-face and otherwise, to discuss our issues and work together to benefit Maine consumers."
