March 19, 2007 GSFB's Betty Ellis and Rick Small, and Jackie Webb, a friend of JoAnn Pike, accept a contribution from Jon Paradise on behalf of credit unions. On Monday, March 19, 2007, in a ceremony called "Renewing a Partnership; Remembering a Partner," Maine's credit unions made a donation of $10,500 to Good Shepard Food Bank in memory of its founder JoAnn Pike. The donation was the fourth contribution that Maine's credit unions have given in Pike's memory since she passed away of cancer on March 17, 2004, and brings the total amount that Maine's credit unions have contributed in her memory to more than $50,000 since 2004.
Pike began the Good Shepard nearly 28 years ago and served as its Executive Director until February of 2004 when her illness forced her to retire. Today, Good Shepherd is the largest food bank north of Boston and serves more than 600 hunger agencies throughout Maine.
In presenting the contribution, Jon Paradise of the Maine Credit Union League said Pike and Maine's credit unions "shared a similar philosophy of 'people helping people,' and doing whatever it takes to help others, whether it is ending hunger or financial services. JoAnn was a special partner and we are proud to continue her legacy of helping end hunger in Maine by keeping her spirit alive and honoring her memory with a special contribution each year."
Maine's credit unions recently announced that in 2006, the 17th year of the Campaign, they set a new Campaign record of $315,419.26 for Ending Hunger. Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $2.3 million to help end hunger in Maine.
