March 27, 2007 Maine CU League President John Murphy, Senate President Beth Edmonds, and the League's Quincy Hentzel Germann. A visit with Maine's Governor John Baldacci and a special and rare invitation to actually stand on the floor of the House and be applauded by Speaker of the House, Glenn Cummings, were a couple of the highlights for representatives from Maine's credit unions attending the 11th Annual Maine Credit Union Day at the State House on Tuesday, March 27, in Augusta.
One of the largest contingents of credit union representatives in several years participated in this year's event and spent the morning visiting with their local legislators over coffee and pastries in the Hall of Flags.
Each of the 186 House and Senate members of the Legislature received a Legislative Goodie bag filled with items donated by credit unions and information about credit unions.
A Joint Resolution sponsored by Speaker Cummings and Senate President Beth Edmonds was read in both the House and Senate. The reading of the House resolution was noteworthy because the Speaker invited all of the credit union representatives to come to the floor of the House and listen to the reading of the Resolution. The Speaker recognized Maine's credit unions "for a long and impressive record of service and assistance to Maine people." After the Resolution was presented, the Speaker invited attendees to come forward to be formally recognized by the entire House.
Prior to the Resolution being read in the House, Governor Baldacci made a special trip from his office to just inside the House Chamber to shake hands and welcome all of the credit union representatives. The Governor said, "Credit unions are very special and I wanted to personally take the opportunity to say 'hello' and applaud you for all you do for the 600,000 Maine people who use a credit union."
