March 30, 2007 Maine children with serious or life-threatening illnesses received a big boost recently from two radiothons that aired in the Portland (107.5 Frank FM) and Bangor (KISS 94.5) markets to raise funds from the Children's Miracle Network in Maine. Both radiothons received strong volunteer and financial contributions from Maine's credit unions, support that was universally applauded by both stations during their live broadcasts.
The Children's MIracle Network provides funds and support for care, equipment and other resources to Maine's two largest pediatric care units, the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland, and Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
In Portland, Maine's credit unions were the official supporters of the volunteer telephone network that accepted contributions from donors during the three-day radiothon and made a contribution to the cause. In Bangor, credit unions volunteered to answer phones and raised funds to support the radiothon, as well. Nancy Dysart, Director of CMN for Eastern Maine Charities, said, "The credit unions in this region are so committed to helping others, not just through CMN but through ending hunger and other causes. They have provided not only great financial support for our efforts but also been active volunteers for CMN for many years. We appreciate them taking the time to be on the air to talk about and encourage their members to support this cause. It means a lot to our efforts."
In an interview on 107.5 Frank FM during the Frank Cares for Kids Radiothon for CMN, Jon Paradise of the Maine Credit Union League, explained, "Maine credit unions are about helping people and communities throughout the state. CMN is one of the many socially responsible effort that credit unions are involved in."
Combined, the radiothons raised $165,000 for Children's Miracle Network, 100% of which stays in Maine to assist Maine children and their families.
Nationally, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), which Maine is a member of, is a major supporter of the Children's Miracle Network through the Credit Unions for Kids charitable campaign.
