Top Fundraising Credit Unions Recognized

June 13, 2007

The Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger recently recognized the top three credit unions in two fundraising categories for their efforts in the 2006 Campaign at a ceremony in Augusta. The Campaign reported that 96% of Maine credit unions participated in the recent Campaign.

The collective fundraising success of Maine's credit unions through the 2006 Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger resulted in more than $315,000 raised through the Campaign, with more than $250,000 of that total returned directly to credit unions to distribute to hunger organizations in their own communities. The remaining funds are contributed to statewide hunger initiatives, such as funding the state's only Food Mobile, a partnership with Good Shepherd Food Bank that delivers food to pantries in every Maine County. More than 300 of Maine's 550 hunger organizations have or will receive funds from Maine's credit unions from the 2006 Campaign. With all administrative costs or expenses covered, 100% of the funds raised stay in Maine and go directly to helping to end hunger.

While every credit union that participated in the Campaign received at least 90% of the funds back to distribute to the hunger organization(s) of their choosing in their communities, the top twenty-five campaign fundraisers in two categories received additional funds as a reward for their extraordinary efforts.

Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League, which organizes the Campaign, said that part of the uniqueness of the campaign is the fact that most of the money each participating credit union raises is returned to that credit union to distribute and make an impact locally. He continued, "Credit unions are part of the communities they serve and helping to end hunger helps to make communities a better place. Credit unions are member-owned organizations so, by their very nature, they are local. Having an impact on the local level is a very important part of this Campaign."
