News Story On Check Fraud Prevention Features Maine CUs

June 29, 2007

In the Tuesday, June 19th segment of 13 on Your Side, a new segment that airs on Tuesdays on Portland-based TV station, WGME News 13, the Maine Credit Union League was featured prominently in the story about the ways to prevent and reduce the growing problem of Check Fraud in Maine.

Dawn Paquet, Check Processing & Support Services Manager, who has twenty years of check processing experience, was interviewed for the segment and spoke at length on how consumers and financial institutions can take steps to protect themselves from being victims of check fraud. In the story, Paquet advised, "Know the person or organization that gave you the check. If you are unsure, check the routing number on the check online and make sure it matches up with the financial institution listed on the check. For financial institutions, teller education can make a big difference in how to spot a fraudulent check."

Paquet told WGME 13 that check fraud is on the rise, primarily due to the fact that people can print their own checks on their home computers. She cautioned anyone that is unsure of whether or not the check is fraudulent or not to "check with your financial institution and don't write any checks using funds from the (potentially fraudulent) check until you are sure because the consumer is responsible for the amount of the check if it turns out to be fraudulent."

Maine CU League President John Murphy said that the news story provided an opportunity "for Maine's credit unions to be a valuable resource for consumers and reinforces our expertise and experience on all types of financial services issues."
