Haitian Relief Funds Collected By Maine Credit Unions Top $20,000 Mark

March 4, 2010

The efforts by the Maine Credit Union League and Maine's credit unions to raise funds for Haiti relief continues at a steady pace, with nearly $3,000 contributed by credit unions and members in just the past week.  As a result, the total funds raised by Maine credit unions to help Haiti is now over the $20,000 mark.  The campaign, "Maine People Helping People Around The Earth - A Fund for Haiti," was launched less than 48 hours after the January 12th earthquake struck and devastated the island nation.

"Clearly, the credit union philosophy of 'people helping people' is alive and well with Maine credit unions and the 600,000 members in Maine. To have raised more than $20,000 in a short period of time is a testament to the generosity of Maine people," explained Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League.  According to Paradise, the majority of the contributions to Haiti relief have come through the Maine Credit Union League's special disaster assistance website at www.cuaid.coop/maine.  "In conjunction with the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF), the website provides a safe and secure way to contribute to the ongoing relief efforts. It is also important to reiterate that 100% of all contributions go directly to relief efforts," said Paradise. All donations via CUAid are forwarded to credit unions, members and the general public in affected areas through the National Credit Union Foundation, a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The Maine Credit Union League said the website will remain activated indefinitely.  "The need for contributions has not diminished in the nearly two months since the earthquake, and Maine's credit unions remain committed to doing all that we can to help," added Paradise.
