February 24, 2010 As news outlets continue to seek positive economic stories, the Maine Credit Union League remains in demand. Since releasing the year-end stats reflecting across the board growth for Maine credit unions in early February, the League has worked with media outlets across the state highlighting the growing popularity of credit unions. On Thursday, February 18, Maine's top-rated NewsTalk radio station, 560 WGAN, became the latest media outlet to interview the Maine Credit Union League. Speaking with Ken & Mike on the popular and influential WGAN Morning News show, League President John Murphy said, "We are seeing more consumers looking for locally-controlled, safe and secure financial services, and credit unions are beneficiaries of that attitude." Murphy also highlighted the significant growth in deposits that occurred at credit unions in the past year, and the "flight to safety mindset that continues to exist when it comes to consumers and the role that credit unions are having in the marketplace."
When asked about the prospects for 2010, Murphy responded, "Credit unions remain well-positioned to help consumers in the year ahead, as consumers begin to make purchases that may have been put off in the last year and a half. Maine credit unions have plenty of liquidity to provide loans to members for worthwhile purchases."
