November 10, 2009 During his week long experience camping out at Camp Keyes in Augusta, B-98.5 radio personality, Randy McCoy, made sure that his listeners knew that Maine's credit unions were a big reason why he gave up his warm bed to once again raise money and food to help food pantries throughout the Capital region. "Because Maine credit unions are so community focused, having the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger as one the food drive's major contributors makes me feel as if the entire community is behind me. That is a warm feeling to have no matter what it is doing outside."
From November 2 - 6, McCoy did a live broadcast 24 hours a day in a special tent provided by the Maine Army National Guard. He was set up just outside of Camp Keyes next to a tank, which served as the visual namesake of the popular country music station's Tanksgiving Food Drive.
In an interview during the Food Drive with McCoy, Jon Paradise of the Maine Credit Union League reiterated the "commitment that Maine's credit unions have to helping end hunger in Maine. This is a problem that not only needs financial support but also continued education of the public about how big this problem is in our state. Credit unions and the 600,000 members have been behind this effort for 20 years now and will continue to support food pantries across Maine as long as there is a need. This food drive is a great way to help food pantries throughout Kennebec County, and we are pleased to be able to do that."
The final totals from the 10th Annual Tanksgiving Food Drive raised more than $6,000 in contributions and collected more than $100,000 worth of non-perishable food items.
