July 31, 2009 The Maine Credit Union League recently became a significant sponsor of a website, MaineMostWanted.org, that is dedicated to reporting crimes and capturing criminals. The site is maintained by the Maine Community Policing Institute at the University of Maine at Augusta in conjunction with local police departments. The site's mission is to aid in the identification of subjects by disseminating photographs and basic police information to the public. As part of its support for the site, the Maine Credit Union League has provided a financial contribution and has placed a link to MaineMostWanted.org in a prominent location on its homepage. "In recent years, there has been an increase in scams, identity theft and robberies of financial institutions in Maine, and we believe supporting this site is one way we can help capture the perpetrators of crimes that impact our credit unions and members as well as help find suspects in a variety of other criminal activities. The public is a great resource in helping to bring criminals to justice and MaineMostWanted.org provides an ideal opportunity for the public's assistance. We are pleased to support this effort in helping to disseminate information about criminal activity to the public," remarked John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League.
MaineMostWanted.org was created in 2004 and includes surveillance videos, artist's sketches and occasionally features subjects wanted for major criminal activity whose whereabouts are unknown. Each page of the site contains fifteen thumbnail photographs of unidentified subjects. The type of crime the subject has committed is always listed beneath each photograph.
