Events Raise $33,000 To Help Credit Unions End Hunger In Maine

June 5, 2009

An annual golf tournament and silent auction combined to help Maine credit unions raise nearly $33,000 for its 2009 Maine CUs' Campaign for Ending Hunger.  Despite the challenging economic times, the total represents the second highest ever in the two decade history of the events.

The Annual Maine Credit Union League's Golf Tournament, held in conjunction with the League's 71st Annual Meeting & Convention, took place at the Augusta Country Club in Augusta.  The Silent Auction took place the following evening at the Convention itself.

"To raise this kind of money in today's economic environment is a testament to the commitment and generosity that Maine's credit unions have to the cause of ending hunger in Maine.  This is about helping people in the communities credit unions serve throughout the state," explained Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League.

Paradise said that last year's tournament raised $34,000 so this year's total represents only a slight decrease.  "In two days, we were able to collect our second highest total ever from our golf tournament and silent auction.  I think everyone is pretty pleased at that accomplishment."

Since 1990, Maine's credit unions have raised more than $3.1 million to help end hunger in Maine, including a record-setting $375,296.59 in 2008.
