December 26, 2008 From new credit union branches in communities where no credit unions had been previously to a shared branch network that gives participating Maine credit unions more than one-third more branches than the closest other financial institution, 2008 will go down as a year where accessing a Maine credit union became easier and more convenient than ever. "In addition to being a great value with many benefits to consumers, Maine credit unions offer a wide variety of locations and access points so using a credit union is more convenient. Maine credit unions are poised to serve even more consumers in the year ahead. It is truly an exciting time to be or consider being a member of a Maine credit union" explained John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League. In 2008, the communities of Corrina and Hermon welcomed a credit union branch for the first time, and Maine's shared branch network added more than 25 new branches. Murphy said that the number of shared branch locations will pass the 100 branch mark in Maine in the first quarter of 2009. In addition, the Maine CU SurF (surcharge-free) ATM Network continued to grow during the past year and now has nearly 200 locations across Maine.
