Credit Union Difference Celebrated

October 10, 2008

For the 60th consecutive year, Maine credit unions will join the credit union movement around the country and the globe in celebrating International Credit Union Week from October 12-18th. In Maine, an active week of activities and events are planned to highlight the benefits and build awareness for Maine's credit unions.

Worldwide, there are 143 million credit union members in 96 countries.  In Maine, which has been the fifth strongest credit union state as far as percentage of population belonging to a credit union (48%), there are 600,000 credit union members.

The Maine Credit Union League said the benefits, philosophy and focus of Maine's credit unions shines every day and this week provides an opportunity to highlight the strength of Maine's credit unions.

Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the League, remarked, "Maine credit unions are popular with consumers because they provide safety and soundness, the latest technology, one of the largest surcharge-free ATM Networks in Maine without hidden fees, and convenience through the shared branching network with more than 90 locations in Maine and 3,400 nationwide.  Combine all of these features with the fact that credit unions are owned by the people who use them - the members and that is the credit union difference."

Maine CU League President John Murphy said, "The economic uncertainty and events of the past few weeks has only served to highlight and reinforce the strengths, values and philosophy of Maine's credit unions and the positive role you serve in the lives of thousands of Maine people."
