May 16, 2008 The Maine Credit Union League recently honored six individuals as the recipients of the Maine CU Movement's annual awards. The recipients were honored at a special ceremony held in Portland in early May in conjunction with the League's 70th Annual Meeting & Convention. Nominees are submitted by credit unions, with the final winners determined by the League's Awards & Convention Committee.
Here are the 2008 Maine Credit Union League Award Winners:
Alexander Ferguson Award for Outstanding Credit Union Volunteer - Robert (Bob) Leathers of Eastmill FCU, with its main office in East Millinocket and a branch in Patten) has served on the credit union's board for nearly thirty years, including the position of board chair for over 20 years. Leathers, a resident of East Millinocket, was hailed as "someone who gives unselfishly of themselves to help his community." In addition to the credit union board, Leathers also serves as chairman of the East Millinocket School Committee, the Knights of Columbus board and several church committees.
James M. Gratto Award for Outstanding Credit Union Manager - David Rossignol, President/CEO of NorState FCU, whose main office is in Madawaska, was recognized as a leader, motivator and mentor for his staff, and "a person who empowers his employees and always keeps the best interests of members in mind." Rossignol has been with the credit union for more than a decade and is also active in his community, serving on a number of committees and civic organizations. He is also a member of the Maine Credit Union League's board, representing the Aroostook Chapter of Credit Unions.
Jeannette G. Morin Award for Outstanding Credit Union Employee - Colleen McGuiggan, HR Manager and Staff Supervisor at Midcoast FCU, with offices in Bath, Brunswick, Edgecomb and Thomaston, has worked at the credit union for 20 years. She began as a teller and has held numerous positions during her tenure. McGuiggan is described as a "great employee who can be depended on to always give 100%." McGuiggan is actively involved in fundraising efforts at the credit union including for the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger, and Special Olympics, as well as numerous other fundraising causes.
League President's Award for Outstanding League Volunteer - Sid Wilder, President/CEO of Taconnet FCU in Winslow and Skowhegan, has worked for 37 years in the Maine Credit Union Movement and will be retiring this fall. A resident of Monmouth, Sid has been an active participant in the Credit Union Movement, serving on committees, boards and as a member of the Maine Credit Union League's Governmental Affairs Committee for the past ten years. Sid was recognized by Maine Credit Union League President John Murphy for "always being willing to get involved and who is a true example of the credit union spirit of cooperation and collaboration."
Diane L. Oceretko ?People Helping People? Award - Christina Carter, a staff member at Maine State CU in Augusta, was recognized as a person hasn't just talked about 'people helping people,' she has done it. As the inspiration behind their credit union's social responsibility committee, she is called "the motivation behind their credit union's success in raising funds for the Maine Credit Unions? Campaign for Ending Hunger." In her four years as a member of the credit union's social responsibility committee, her enthusiasm has pushed her credit union to the number one spot in dollars raised for the past two years. Carter, who lives in Winthrop, also devotes her energy and creativity to many other causes including serving on her local town's PTA, volunteering in her children's classrooms every week, and many other projects that come along. Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman's Award - Luke Labbe, President/CEO of PeoplesChoice CU, which has locations in Biddeford, Saco, Sanford and Wells, in Lewiston, was honored for leading by example on the importance of being active in grassroots and political activities. Labbe was recognized for pioneering a new event to raise funds for CULAC, an event that, in five years, has become the single largest, one-day fundraiser for CULAC. As a result of this event, the League has not only been able to increase the amount of funds raised for CULAC but raised awareness, as well. In presenting Labbe with the Award, Tucker Cole, President/CEO of Evergreen CU and chair of the League's GAC, commended him "for making a positive impact on helping the League's Governmental Affairs activities be successful, not through just words but actions."
