Maine CUs Think This Is The Week To Have 'The Conversation'

April 18, 2008

Over the years, there are a number of conversations that take place between parent and child while they are growing up but one conversation that often gets overlooked is "the one about money."  From April 20-26, Maine credit unions are hoping to change that with a number of activities, resources and information about money management available for parents and children during Maine Credit Union Youth Week.

With more than two-thirds of Maine credit unions planning some type of program, activity or outreach project during the week, there are opportunities for parents and children to use the occasion to discuss topics, such as budgeting, spending, savings and other money management concepts that are often overlooked, many times until after it is too late.

Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League, said, "Money is much easier for kids to access today through repeated credit card offers and other methods that Maine credit unions feel it is essential to help kids to understand the consequences of their actions and decisions when it comes to money before it is too late.  Maine credit unions have taken a leadership role in starting the conversation with parents and kids about money management and it is essential to continue to talk and teach Maine children about it."

Paradise said that the Maine Credit Union League's web site has a special Youth Financial Services link on its home page that offers a number of resources and other information to help both parents and kids.  During Maine CU Youth Week, the message is clear, "Money talks - join the conversation."
