TGIF(s)!  Maine CUs adding spirit to Fridays

February 1, 2017

For the third straight winter, thousands of Maine high school students are getting up in the dark and the cold to go to school - well before the first bell.  Why?  To support the School Spirit Challenge and to raise funds and food for the Good Shepherd Food Bank.  And, at every participating school, Maine's credit unions are part of the festivities to highlight the issue of hunger in Maine, and as the lead sponsor of WGME CBS 13's popular activity.

The School Spirit Challenge began on the second Friday of January, and will continue at a different high school each Friday leading up to the finale on Friday, March 10, at WGME and FOX 23's studios in Portland.  The aim is for each participating high school to collect as much food and money for Good Shepherd Food Bank.  Each Friday morning from 6 a.m. - 8 a.m., WGME CBS 13 and FOX 23, is at a high school gym packed with students doing different activities and fun as part of the live broadcast.  At the end of the Challenge, the Top 3 schools will be announced at the in-studio event, and the Top school will be awarded with a trophy and a check for $1,000 for financial education from Maine's credit unions.

"Ending hunger represents a community challenge, and the School Spirit Challenge is a great way to get young people involved in helping in their own community.  Because Maine's credit unions are a leader in raising money to end hunger in Maine, our connection to the School Spirit Challenge is an extension of that effort.  It also helps to build awareness of credit unions among the next generation," stated Jon Paradise, Vice President of Governmental and Public Affairs for the Maine CU League.

Jeff Peterson, Anchor at WGME CBS 13 and the host of the School Spirit Challenge, called the involvement of Maine's credit unions in not only providing financial support but in taking an active role at each high school during the event "is really appreciated.  Maine credit unions are a great partner in this event."

Watch the School Spirit Challenge every Friday from 6 a.m. - 8 a.m., on WGME CBS 13 and FOX 23.  For a complete list of schools and the broadcast schedule, click here.
