Spreading holiday cheer!  Maine CUs purchase 10,000 holiday meals for hungry Mainers

December 22, 2016

On Wednesday, December, 21, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger in partnership with the Good Shepard Food Bank celebrated the 11th anniversary of Maine’s first Food Mobile. To mark the occasion, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger made a contribution of $2,500, which is just a portion of the record-setting $623,000 raised in the 2015 Campaign.

The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger’s contribution of $2,500 will provide over 10,000 holiday meals to Maine families in addition to supporting the Food Mobile to ensure Maine’s most in need and underserved families will have continued access to food.

"Throughout the year, Maine's credit unions raise funds and give back to ending hunger in communities across the state.  At the holidays, we wanted to give one, final contribution for the year to help provide meals to Maine families, as well as recognize the fact that hunger never takes a holiday.  Giving back is the greatest gift we can give," remarked Jon Paradise, Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the Maine CU League, in remarks attended by several food pantries who will receive some of the meals that the funds will purchase.  Good Shepherd Food Bank's Melissa Huston called the contribution "a kind gesture from Maine's credit unions in remembering those less fortunate.  While we gather with loved ones during the holidays and enjoy bountiful meals, many Mainers aren't so lucky so this contribution means a lot in helping us provide meals to them."

The Food Mobile is specifically designed to transport food across great distances at safe temperatures delivering a mix of frozen, refrigerated, and dry grocery goods. The mobile pantry visits communities whose demand for emergency and supplemental food has outgrown the capacity of local food pantries.

In 2015, the Food Mobile hit the road over 130 times, delivered nearly 600,000 pounds of food and covered every county in the state. Since its inception in 2005, the Food Mobile has distributed over 5.6 million pounds of food, or 4.6 million meals, throughout the state.

Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $6.5 million to help end hunger in Maine.
