Key Legislative Committees filled with CU-friendly legislators
January 11, 2017
Over the holidays, the Maine Legislature announced assignments for its Legislative Committees for the next two years, and the Maine CU League is pleased that so many CU-friendly legislators have been assigned to the two Committees, Insurance and Financial Services and Judiciary, that consider the majority of issues related to and impacting Maine credit unions. "Committees play such an important role in the legislative process, so it is nice to have so many strong CU supporters, including all four Chairs, serving on these two Committees. Many of the members attended one of our recent Legislative Breakfasts or Luncheons so they are already familiar with some of our issues that may come before them this session," stated John Murphy, President of the Maine CU League.
Of the 13 members assigned to the Insurance and Financial Services Committee, nearly two-thirds were endorsed by the League during the last Election cycle includiing both the Senate and House Chair. In addition, two of the Committee members are credit union volunteers - Rep. John Picchiotti, Board Chair at KSW FCU; and Rep. Ray Wallace, who serves on the Board at Maine Highlands FCU.
For the Judiciary Committee, more than three-quarters of the Committee members received a League endorsement. This Committee also has two members with strong CU connections - Senator Lisa Keim, who is the Senate Chair, is the wife of Oxford FCU Board Member, Blue, and Rep. Dick Bradstreet, who is a former Board Chair at Winslow Community FCU.
"While we work with a variety of Committees throughout the session, having are two main Committees of jurisdiction filled with legislators we have identified as CU- friendly, including four with direct credit union connections, positions us well as we prepare for a busy session," remarked Elise Baldacci, Director of Governmental Affairs for the Maine CU League.
