Co-Captain with Sully among Highlights as Nearly 850 Expected to attend Maine CU League Annual Meeting and Convention The Maine Credit Union League’s 79th Annual Meeting & Convention will take place at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland, on Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20. With credit union membership reaching a record 685,926 members in 2016, the Convention is also seeing an increase among registrants. Maine CUs help celebrate financial education for new Mainers

Maine's credit unions joined Community Financial Literacy (CFL), a Portland-based organization dedicated to helping immigrants and new Mainers navigate and better understand personal finance, in celebrating its successes over the past year at CFL's Annual Celebration on May 11, in Portland. "Not-for-profit cooperatives did not cause financial crisis but member owners bearing burden of over-regulation," League reports to Congressman Poliquin, urging his support of Financial Choice Act

In communications to Congressman Bruce Poliquin, the Maine Credit Union League reported that regulatory burden has cost Maine credit unions $43.4 million and led to another $5.8 million in costs. The League is urging Congressman Poliquin to support the Financial Choice Act, which is being considered by the House Financial Services Committee, which the Congressman serves on, and would provide relief to credit unions and members. National Volunteer Week highlights impact of Maine CU volunteering

In 2016, Maine credit union staff and volunteers contributed nearly 38,000 hours in volunteer time, worth nearly $820,000 in time, to causes, organizations, events and activities as documented through the Maine CU League's CUs Share for ME volunteer program. "From helping at the local little league field and teaching financial education in schools to serving meals at the local soup kitchen and playing basketball to help children with cancer, Maine credit unions exemplify the credit union philosophy of 'people helping people' every day," said Jon Paradise, Vice President of Governmental and Public Affairs for the Maine CU League, in announcing the results of CU volunteering during National Volunteer Week. Two Maine CUs hope others race to help end hunger

Two Maine credit unions are coordinating upcoming events aimed at raising funds and awareness for ending hunger, and participation in both events are open to other CUs and the community. On Saturday, April 29, Maine State CU will host its Annual Feed ME 5K Walk/Run in Augusta; and on Saturday, May 20, York County FCU its first ever Run to End Hunger 5K Walk and Run in Alfred. Since it debuted in late 2016, the Maine Credit Union League's new Statewide Awareness Campaign, "Belong to a CU and Own It," has received significant, positive feedback and attention from consumers. Last week at the Credit Union National Association's (CUNA) Diamond Awards ceremony in San Antonio, Texas, the Campaign was honored with a prestigious Best in Category Diamond Award. According to recently-released year-end statistics for 2016, the popularity and usage of Maine’s credit unions continued to surge in 2016 in all growth categories, led by an increase of nearly 20,000 new members in the past year alone. As of year-end 2016, membership in Maine’s credit unions grew to 685,926 members. While membership growth was impressive, perhaps, even more impressive and important to Maine’s economy was the fact that Maine’s credit unions reported an increase of more than $456 million in lending. Legislators heap praise on Maine's credit unions at CU Day in Augusta

That was the prevailing theme at the Annual Maine CU Day at the State House, held on Thursday, March 30, in the Hall of Flags in Augusta.
