Maine Credit Unions announce preparations to help state workers impacted if state does shutdown

As a Maine state government shutdown approaches at the close of business on June 30, Maine’s credit unions have come together to offer assistance to state workers impacted by the shutdown. If a shutdown does occur, many of the state’s 58 credit unions will be offering special no or low interest loans to cover the loss of paychecks for state employees who are out of work in the event of a shutdown of Maine State government, and a variety of other forms of assistance. Radio show reinforces leadership of Maine CUs with fighting elder financial abuse

Prior to being a founding member of the Senior$afe program, the groundbreaking program formed by credit unions, state elder services, and others in 2014, Maine credit unions had already been a long-time leader in helping to prevent elder financial abuse of Maine seniors. The formation of Senior$afe has only strengthened that commitment, and the recent participation by a Maine CU representative in a statewide radio show on the subject was an opportunity to again highlight the issue. Maine House, Senate vote overwhelmingly to override veto of bill to update State Credit Union Charter

Thanks to a strong, coordinated effort from the Maine Credit Union League's legislative team, credit unions and a number of legislators, the Legislature voted overwhelmingly in favor of overriding the Governor's veto of L.D. 1055 - An Act to Update the State Credit Union Charter. On Tuesday, June 6, the House voted 141-5 in support of overriding the veto, and the Senate voted unanimously today (June 8) to override the veto. As a result, the bill has been passed into law. Collectively, Maine's credit unions are not only committed to serving the more than 685,000 Mainers with financial services, but also in making contributions to make the communities better places to live, to provide products and initiatives to help members, and to supporting strong learning opportunities to promote youth and adult financial education. Recently, some of these CU initiatives were honored with a state award from the Maine Credit Union League. All first-place recipients will compete in the national competition in the fall. Maine Credit Unions Make Significant Contribution to Combat Senior Hunger

On Thursday, May 25, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger presented five checks for $1,000 each to Maine’s Area Agencies on Aging Meals on Wheels programs in recognition of National Older Americans Month. The presentation took place at the Spectrum Generations Hallowell location, where the funds were presented to a representative from each agency, including the Southern Maine Agency on Aging, Spectrum Generations, SeniorsPlus, Eastern Area Agency on Aging, and Aroostook Area Agency on Aging. Capitalizing on a theme, "Maine's credit unions - A World of Opportunity," that highlighted the strong growth of Maine's credit unions, the 2017 Maine Credit Union League's 79th Annual Meeting and Convention, was an out-of-this-world success. The Convention, held May 19-20 in Portland, attracted nearly 875 attendees, the largest crowd in decades. Success." "Interest, participation and engagement from attendees in the Convention was as strong as I've seen it in my nearly 30 years with the League. Maine CUs help celebrate financial education for new Mainers

Maine's credit unions joined Community Financial Literacy (CFL), a Portland-based organization dedicated to helping immigrants and new Mainers navigate and better understand personal finance, in celebrating its successes over the past year at CFL's Annual Celebration on May 11, in Portland.
