Key Legislative Committees filled with CU-friendly legislators

Over the holidays, the Maine Legislature announced assignments for its Legislative Committees for the next two years, and the Maine CU League is pleased that so many CU-friendly legislators have been assigned to the two Committees, Insurance and Financial Services and Judiciary, that consider the majority of issues related to and impacting Maine credit unions. "Committees play such an important role in the legislative process, so it is nice to have so many strong CU supporters, including all four Chairs, serving on these two Committees. Many of the members attended one of our recent Legislative Breakfasts or Luncheons so they are already familiar with some of our issues that may come before them this session," stated John Murphy, President of the Maine CU League. 3Q stats show new records for Maine CUs

Through the first nine months of 2016, Maine credit unions posted strong growth in all categories including assets, loans, shares and membership. "Not only do more consumers continue to join a Maine credit union but their usage of products and services continues to grow at a healthy pace, as well. On Wednesday, December, 21, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger in partnership with the Good Shepard Food Bank celebrated the 11th anniversary of Maine’s first Food Mobile. To mark the occasion, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger made a contribution of $2,500, which is just a portion of the record-setting $623,000 raised in the 2015 Campaign. Sales of CDs helping to boost ending hunger; Still time to purchase and have for holidays

Three different CDs are once again being offered by Maine's credit unions to help raise funds for the Maine CUs' Campaign for Ending Hunger, and sales of all three are reportedly brisk. The three CDs will be available while supplies last until at least June 1, 2017, but sales are particularly steady for the 2016 holiday season, and it's not too late to purchase copies and have in time for someone to open as a holiday gift. Strong bipartisan support for CUs as new Legislative Leaders were all League-endorsed

On Wednesday, December 7, the 128th Maine Legislature was officially convened with all 186 legislators sworn in by Governor LePage in ceremonies at the State House in Augusta. Though the new Legislative session won't actually begin until right after the start of the new year, leaders for both parties in the Maine House and Senate have begun their new roles. Maine CU League-endorsed candidates have high success rate on Election Day

Although several automatic recounts will likely be triggered in a few races, unofficial results from Election Day point to a big winner - Maine's credit unions. Of the 160 legislative candidates endorsed by the Maine Credit Union League, 143 were victorious giving the League an overall endorsement success rate for the Maine Legislature at an impressive 89%.
