On Tuesday, November 28, the 16th Annual Maine Credit Unions’ Ending Hunger Walking and Awareness Tour came to its conclusion with a special ceremony at Changing Seasons FCU in Hampden. Brenda Davis, one of Maine’s leading ending hunger advocates, has spent nearly five weeks traveling across the state to focus attention on the severity of hunger in Maine. Maine CUs announce emergency grant for Bath Area Food Pantry

Maine CUs cite cooperation, preparedness in 'weathering' storm's impact

When a powerful storm made its way to Maine Sunday night and continued into daybreak on Monday morning, its impact was significant. With more than 400,000 customers throughout the state without power immediately following the storm, a number higher than the devastating ice storm of 1998, businesses, including credit unions, were forced to quickly move into business continuity mode. From directing members to other CUs for shared branch transactions and utilizing generators, a quick scan of CUs across the state found that few members were inconvenienced as a result of the storm. Extra Credit! Maine Credit Unions make significant contribution to expand school backpack and pantry programs across Maine

At one of the state’s earliest school food pantries, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger presented a check for $33,000, a portion of the record-setting $675,000 Maine’s credit unions raised for ending hunger in 2016, to support the Good Shepherd Food Bank’s school backpack and pantry programs across Maine. The contribution was the second installment of a three-year, $100,000 pledge to help fight childhood hunger, and was made at the John F. Kennedy Kindergarten Center in Biddeford, which has provided more than 43,000 meals to its student community since it started in 2013. The contribution will not only support existing schools but continue to help expand this vital program to additional schools across Maine in the coming months. Read More...
